Today, we finally got an update around Season 3 of Marathon from Bungie and…. it wasn’t a good one.

Season 3 Cancelled

Runners have been eagerly awaiting Season 3 of Marathon, which was supposed to launch on September 22nd, but all the new content that Season 3 was supposed to bring has been pushed to the Symbiosis update that is scheduled for December 8th. In simpler terms, Season 3 has been cancelled. In fact, seasons have been scrapped with Bungie stating: “We’re also moving away from a strict seasonal schedule. Instead of tying major updates to fixed seasonal deadlines, we’re giving the team more flexibility to build, test, and improve features before they are released.”

In October, we’ll instead get a wipe to the game on October 6th, as well as the return of Vault Breaker, other experimental modes, and quality of life improvements.

Symbiosis Major Update

The next major update to the game will now come on December 8th with Symbiosis.

Marathon Symbiosis Update Art

The cover art for this update looks pretty sick and kinda hints at bigger PvE raids (4 Runners on screen!), but pushing the next big update from next week til December is a massive buzzkill.

Bungie promises that Symbiosis will be be “the first major step in Marathon’s next chapter” and that it will introduce the first permanent PvE mode to the game, starting the game’s evolution to it’s next iteration.

The update will also include the Perimeter updates intended for Season 3, a new social hub and firing range (huge), a new Runner Shell, an experimental Team Deathmatch mode, as well as new player experience improvements.

It does sound pretty cool, but is waiting til December too long? Will player return to a game they’ve surely already left? I guess we’ll find out.

I’ll see ya’ll on Tau Ceti!
